    Crop spraying

Crop spraying in South Africa is seasonal, with the summer season seeing maize being planted countrywide and in the Eastern Free State as well as beans, potatoes and sunflowers. In the winter aircraft operate mainly out of the Southern and Western Cape where herbicides, fungicides and fertilisers are applied to wheat and barley crops.

In the spring, the aircraft generally move back to the Eastern Free State where they apply herbicides and insecticides to wheat. In the Mpumalanga Province the aircraft spray tea plantations and in the Northern Province cotton and sugar. Large areas of maize are planted in the western areas of the Northwest and Free State Provinces and are treated with herbicides and insecticides, through the summer months of December, January and February. Although the majority of the crop dusting aircraft are based in South Africa, Orsmond Aerial Spray also operates in Malawi, Zambia and Botswana.
